Ethiopian Brewery in Switzerland
Nubia Brew is a craft brewery based in Appenzell, Switzerland, founded by three friends — Atoma Gudissa, Asrat Tsegaye and Abate Yimam — who were born in Ethiopia and grew up in Eastern Switzerland. That dual belonging is the heart of the brand: African and Swiss brewing traditions meet, and ancient grains come together with fresh Swiss spring water.
The beer draws on a brewing heritage reaching back to ancient Nubia and Ethiopian home-brewing, where families still brew to recipes passed down through generations using native grains such as teff, sorghum and dagussa. Since 2023 the beer has been produced at Brauerei Locher in Appenzell — one of Switzerland’s most respected and award-winning breweries. The result is a range of genuinely original beers, “Produced by Ethiopians,” you won’t find anywhere else in Switzerland.
